Tutorial :: Express Beach Waves / by rubi

I love teaching people how easy it is to use a curling iron. They may appear intimidating, but you can honestly get beautiful curls in just minutes if you use one correctly. I taught this hairstyle at one of my free workshops at Wanderlust in Paris a couple weeks ago. It's always so much fun to get together with a bunch of girls and do our hair. Afterwards, we all went to the "photomaton" and took photos of our hair in the photo booth on site. The illustrations below are by Samantha Hahn and our products and curling irons were provided by Rusk and Babyliss Pro.

This tutorial is a variation on my Curling Iron Waves tutorial, see detailed steps and photos of that here.

Here's what you need :
- hair spray
- 1 inch curling iron (we used Babyliss Pro curling irons)

Prep your hair by spraying a light hold hairspray all over your hair. I used Rusk hairspray and I actually had some girls at the workshop spray their hair once, brush it completely and then spray it all again because their hair was so soft. The hairspray will help your hair curl faster, hold your curls longer and protect your hair from the heat of the curling iron.

1. Curl all of your hair so it goes away from your face. Everything should be curled going towards the back of your head.

2. Hold your curling iron with the tip pointing down and wrap your hair around it starting as close to your scalp as possible.

3. Don't clamp the iron shut. You will avoid making any creases in your hair this way.

4. After curling each section, tug on it by holding the ends and pulling down on your hair. This will give you a soft beachy wave as opposed to Shirley Temple ringlets.

5. Once everything is curled, let all of your hair cool and then shake it out, shake it out, ooh wooah.
